‘The Odyssey’ Sails Past $600 Million at Global Box Office

The Odyssey

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey continues to dominate the box office, sailing past $600 million worldwide this weekend. The epic showed little sign of slowing down in its second frame.

Strong Second Weekend

After opening with $123.5 million domestically last weekend, The Odyssey added another $87 million at the domestic box office. That marks a decline of just 30 percent, an exceptional hold for a blockbuster.

Among films that opened above $100 million, that gives The Odyssey the third-best second-weekend hold ever. Only Wicked and Top Gun: Maverick performed better.

The $87 million haul also ranks as the second-best second weekend ever for an R-rated film. Deadpool & Wolverineholds the record after earning $97 million in its second weekend two years ago.

The Odyssey is expected to finish the weekend with an estimated $286.4 million domestically. Its worldwide total should reach $639.9 million.

Disney Celebrates Another Billion-Dollar Hit

Disney also had reason to celebrate this weekend as Toy Story 5 crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide. The milestone makes it the No. 6 Pixar release of all time.

No new wide release challenged The Odyssey this weekend. Studios largely stayed clear of Universal and Nolan, who remains the undisputed name-brand filmmaker working today.

That changes next weekend when Sony and Marvel unleash Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The film stars The Odysseycastmembers and married couple Tom Holland and Zendaya.

Nolan Connects With Younger Audiences

This summer has also seen Gen Z filmmakers behind Obsession and Backrooms emerge as a breakout story. Nolan represents the establishment, but he has still managed to capture the attention of younger moviegoers.

Half of The Odyssey’s opening-weekend audience was between the ages of 18 and 34. The film has amassed $322 million globally.

IMAX Drives the Epic

Premium-format screens have played a major role in the film’s success. IMAX accounted for 23 percent of its opening-weekend haul.

The Odyssey is the first narrative feature shot entirely with IMAX cameras. This weekend alone, it brought in $48 million globally from IMAX screens.

Nolan Gets a Taste for Horror

The film also ventures into horror during several sequences. Nolan told The Hollywood Reporter that making the movie “very much whets my appetite for more” of the genre.

Nolan has also praised both Obsession and Backrooms. Speaking about what could draw him further into horror, he said: “You have to have an amazing idea. When you go see a film like Obsession, that’s an amazing idea. That movie works like a motherfucker.”

The top 12 movies of the weekend, as of Sunday, July 26, are as follows.
