Mad Cave Studios is bringing The Last Starfighter back with a new five-issue comic series. The series launches in July 2026 and continues the story of the 1984 sci-fi film.
The original movie, directed by Nick Castle and written by Jonathan Betuel, helped push early visual effects technology. It became a defining title for a generation of arcade-era fans.
Original Creator Returns
Jonathan Betuel returns to expand the story. He is working with producer Paul Davidson and the new creative team.
“Chronicling and expanding the ‘Heart Over Hardware’ adventures of a trailer park hayseed as he saves the whales, the universe, and those he loves with Mad Cave’s talented team has been a blast!” Betuel said.
Creative Team Builds the Next Chapter
Writers Benjamin Raab and Deric A. Hughes lead the series. Their past credits include Warehouse 13, Arrow, and Quantum Leap.
Artist Willi Roberts handles interiors. Francesco Segala provides colors, and Rob Jones handles lettering.
Issue #1 features cover art by Taurin Clarke, Rahzzah, David LaFuente, and Stephanie Hans.
Story Picks Up After the Film
The story continues directly after the original film. Alex Rogan has already saved multiple worlds. Now he leads, and stands as the only member of, the Star League.
He must rebuild the galaxy’s defense force to face Xur and the Ko-Dan Armada. The series introduces new Starfighters and expands the roster of allies and enemies.
Writers Reflect on the Legacy
Raab pointed to the film’s lasting appeal.
“Back in the ’80s, The Last Starfighter was the ultimate fantasy for every kid who grew up playing arcade games,” he said. “As a lifelong fan of the movie, I’m honored to be a part of the team continuing this adventure for a new generation of Starfighters.”
Hughes connected the project to the film’s message.
“When an opportunity comes your way, you’ve got to grab it with both hands and hold on tight,” he said. “We hope our story inspires you enough to grab a copy with both hands and hold on tight, too.”
A Personal Connection for the Artist
Roberts said the project carries personal meaning.
“I remember watching that movie as a very young child,” he said. “When we discussed everything we could contribute to this story, I understood that we had a great franchise in front of us.”
He added that the team aims to deliver a sequel that brings both emotion and a strong sense of adventure.
Release Date and Launch Details
The Last Starfighter #1 arrives in comic shops on July 1, 2026. The final order cutoff date is June 8.
The series launches a new chapter in the franchise. It expands the universe, introduces new characters, and resets the stakes for the galaxy.
