With Seth Grahame-Smith’s book, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, a new sub-genre of horror/parody novels was born. With Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Grahame-Smith upped the ante by bringing in historical figures into the fray. David O. Russell is now in the directors chair to bring Pride to the big screen (starring Natalie Portman) and Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is now in development with Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov producing, now seems the time to snatch up all the good zombie stories before they’re gone.
Pulp Fiction producers Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher have snatched up the rights for the soon-to-be-published Paul is Undead: The British Zombie Invasion by Alan Goldsher for their Double Feature production company, according to Deadline.
Even though this project is in the very earliest stages of development, Stacey Sher is very excited about this new project. “I am a huge Beatles fan like the rest of the world and Alan’s Mash up is a fun, funny read” said Sher. “How can you not love a book where Jesus agrees with the zombie John Lennon, that the Beatles are in fact bigger than him? We will be going out to studios, financers and talent soon.”
With illustrations provided by the Goldsher, the novel re-imagines the story of the Fab Four, with Zombie John killing and then reanimating Paul, George and Ringo to join him in creating hit after hit as they steal the hearts and minds (and snack on the brains) of fans everywhere. In pursuit of the undead Beatles are Britain’s greatest zombie hunter, Mick Jagger and Ninja Lord Yoko Ono.
Says Goldsher of his book: “The Beatles offer something contemporary with a great mythology about it. The story of the Beatles has an arc; there are all these weird twists and turns in it. So much so that there’s almost a supernatural element to it. For instance, they were off in Germany for a time, which would have been the perfect opportunity for them to kill all sorts of fans and worshippers. Paul and John fought all the time, so I turned that into big gruesome battles with dismemberments.”
Alan Goldsher’s book, Paul is Undead, will be released on June 22, and will have a list price of $15.00.
In other Beatle film news, it was announced last week that the frontman of the now defunct band Oasis, Liam Gallagher, will be producing a film based on the 1972 Richard DiLello book The Longest Cocktail Party:An Insider’s Diary of the Beatles, Their Million Dollar Apple Empire and its Wild Rise and Fall. The film will follow the Beatles career from the formation of Apple Corps in 1968, to the band’s demise in 1970.
No word yet on when either film will begin filming. Stay tuned….
