More Names Added for a Chance to be Captain America

Captain_America_WHO?Casting for Captain America has slowed down to a crawl.  Last month, director Joe Johnston said casting of the title role was only a few weeks away and even hinted that the casting process would be over by March 1.  Now it seems with each and every day, another name is being thrown in to the ring for the role of Steve Rogers/Captain America.

Now today, we’re hearing from The Hollywood Reporter that “G.I. Joe” star Channing Tatum is being considered for the role (this of course, coming after yesterday’s news that Ryan Phillipe is also being considered). They both joined other contenders Chris Evans, Garrett Hedlund, Wilson Bethel and Mike Vogel to Marvel’s “shortlist” which seems to be growing instead of shrinking lately.

Tatum has made his desire to play Steve Rogers on the screen no secret.  In an interview with MTV News, he stated:

“I would love to play Captain America. I actually really, really would love it. I love Captain America. I’m not a big aficionado on him, but I know who we was, and I like him as a character.”

Tatum was previously under consideration to appear in “Thor” , so it is only a matter of time before his dreams of portraying a superhero come true.

Other casting possibilities being banded around are for the role of Betsy Ross, Steve Roger’s flame during World War II. For that role, it seems that Kiera Knightley as been approached by the studio, but also in the running are Emily Blunt and Alice Eve. According to Deadline Hollywood, it looks as though Blunt might have the upper hand. She was Marvel’s first pick for the role of the Black Widow in Iron Man 2, but had to back out due to scheduling conflicts.

Also, there has been no movement to finalize the deal that would make Hugo Weaving play the part of Captain America’s nemesis, the Red Skull, which was announced at the end of last week.

With the on-going process taking so long, one can only hope they can start shooting as scheduled in June.
