In a move of what can be called interesting licensing, Mattel has unveiled limited edition Barbie’s based on the AMC television series Mad Men. The four dolls will be versions of Joan Holloway, Roger Sterling, and Don and Betty Draper.
Mattel is using the classic early 60’s Barbie face for the ladies, and from the photo, it looks like Don and Roger’s hair are molded as part of the head and not synthetic hair (as Ken’s hair is now). The dolls are dressed very aptly like their screen counterparts in classic early sixties clothes.
The dolls will come with period accessories like hats, overcoats, pearls and padded undergarments. Unfortunately, they won’t have cigarettes, ashtrays, martini glasses or cocktail shakers.. but Mattel is a toy company, mostly making toys for children. Granted, this line is NOT for children with each dolls retailing for $74.95. The dolls are a part of Mattel’s premium-price collector’s line called the Barbie Fashion Model Collection and the dolls will have limited runs of between 7,000 – 10,000 copies.
No word yet on when the dolls will be available.
