After weeks of speculation on who would play the warrior, it is now confirmed that Jason Momoa will be Conan the Barbarian. Casting had been a struggle for Lionsgate with three actors in the running for the part. Kellan Lutz (Twilight) and Jared Padelecki (Supernatural) were the other names mentioned for the role, but it was Momoa’s screen test and charm during the audition process that won him the part.
Jason Momoa is most well known as Ronon Dex from Stargate: Atlantis. The 30 year- old Hawaiian can also be seen in HBO’s Game of Thrones later this year and the upcoming direct to DVD Stargate: Extinction.
The reboot of the Conan franchise is being helmed by Marcus Nispel, with a screenplay by Andrew Lobel, Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer.
The film is set to start shooting in Bulgaria in mid March and is likely to have a summer 2011 release date.
In other possible casting news for the film, Latino Review is reporting that Mickey Rourke has been offered the role of Corin, Conan’s father. No word on if Rourke has accepted yet, stay tuned here for more news.
