Hayley Atwell to Play Captain America’s Love

Atwell_Evans_Captain_AmericaA few days ago, it was reported that the role of Peggy Carter, love interest of Steve Rogers/Captain America was down to two young British actresses, Alice Eve and Hayley Atwell.  Marvel Studios announced that Hayley Atwell has won the role after screen testing was done in London last week.

In the comics, Peggy Carter is an American woman fighting alongside the French Resistance during World War II. She forges an alliance with Captain America and his soldiers to defeat the Nazis led by the evil and ruthless Red Skull, and eventually strikes up a romantic relationship with Rogers. A Marvel Studios press release indicates that Carter “will be updated for the feature adaption” though there is no word on what that will entail.

Hayley Atwell is best known for her roles in such period pieces as Brideshead Revisited and The Duchess, and was seen last year in AMC’s mini-series The Prisoner.  She’ll next been seen this summer in an 8 part mini-series The Pillars of Earth on Starz starting July 23. She joins Chris Evans as Steve Rogers /Captain America and Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes. Hugo Weaving is still negotiations to play the Red Skull at this moment.

Captain America: The First Avenger will be directed by Joe Johnston and begins shooting in London this summer.  The film is scheduled for release on July 22, 2011.
