In a jointly issued press release, the Jim Henson Company and Australian based Omnilab Media stated today that the two companies are teaming up for the long awaited sequel to the Dark Crystal, titled Power of the Dark Crystal.
Twin brothers Peter and Michael Spierig (the Undead, and Daybreakers) are directing, with the screenplay coming from Craig Pearce (Moulin Rouge, Strictly Ballroom). The original film’s production designer and well acclaimed fantasy illustrator Brian Froud is already hard at work creating the conceptual designs for the film, which will blend puppetry and animatronics with CGI.
Michael Spierig said this in the press release: “We feel a tremendous amount of responsibility in telling this story with the same meticulous care that Jim Henson and Frank Oz gave the 1982 original.”
His twin brother Peter added “This is a chance to take the world of puppetry into the modern age by using modern techniques (like motion capture CGI) and the tried and true methods (like puppetry and animatronics) to create a one hundred percent real world that is unique to The Dark Crystal.”
The sequel is set hundreds of years in the future, when darkness has fallen cross the world again. A young girl made of fire journeys together with a Gelfling outcast to steal a shard of the legendary Crystal to reignite the dying sun that exists at the center of the planet.
No word yet on when production will begin. Power of the Dark Crystal will be made in 3D.
