Warner Bros. Gets Spliced

SpliceWarner Bros. Pictures will release director Vincenzo Natali’s startlingly original sci-fi thriller “Splice,” recently acquired by Joel Silver’s Dark Castle Entertainment.

“Splice” debuted to critical and audience acclaim at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival with its story of two ambitious young biologists who risk their careers—and their lives—by pushing the boundaries of science to serve their own curiosity.

Silver, Chairman of Dark Castle Entertainment, said, “Vincenzo has made a thought-provoking thriller that combines horror, science fiction and moments of dark humor in a fascinating exploration of one of today’s most controversial topics. ‘Splice’ is like nothing you’ve ever seen before.”

The film stars Academy Award® winner Adrien Brody (“The Pianist,” “Hollywoodland,” “King Kong”); Sarah Polley (“Dawn of the Dead,” “The Secret Life of Words”), who is also an Oscar® nominee for Best Screenplay for “Away From Her”; and newcomer Delphine Chanéac (“The Pink Panther”).

Directed and co-written by Vincenzo Natali (“Paris je t’aime,” “Cube”) and produced under the banner of Copperheart Entertainment/Gaumont, “Splice” is produced by Steven Hoban of Copperheart Entertainment and executive produced by Sidonie Dumas and Christophe Riandee of Gaumont. Guillermo del Toro, Don Murphy, Susan Montford and Yves Chevalier also serve as executive producers. The screenplay was written by Natali, Antoinette Terry Bryant and Doug Taylor.

Superstar genetic engineers Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley) specialize in splicing together DNA from different animals to create incredible new hybrids. Now they want to use human DNA in a hybrid that could revolutionize science and medicine. But when the pharmaceutical company that funds their research forbids it, Clive and Elsa secretly conduct their own experiments. The result is Dren, an amazing, strangely beautiful creature of uncommon intelligence and an array of unexpected physical developments. And though, at first, Dren exceeds their wildest dreams, she begins to grow and learn at an accelerated rate—and threatens to become their worst nightmare.
