Twentieth Century Fox has announced that the prequel for the Planet of the Apes films, tentatively titled Rise of the Apes, has a release date set for June 24, 2011.In the official press release, Fox announced that the film will be using CG apes created by Peter Jackson’s Oscar winning effects house, WETA Digital, instead of costumed actors.
The new story will be “set in present day San Francisco, where man’s own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.”
As reported here back in March, Rupert Wyatt (The Escapist) has been tapped to direct Rise of the Apes (then known as Caesar) from a screenplay by Amanda Silver & Rick Jaffa, who are also producing.
No word yet on casting or filming, but with news that this film is set to be released only 14 months from now, no doubt we’ll hear more news shortly.
