According to sources at Entertainment Weekly, Summit Entertainment is looking to bring in an Oscar nominated director for the final (possible two) installment(s) of the Twilight series of films, Breaking Dawn. The three being mentioned are Gus Van Sant (Milk), Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation) and Bill Condon (Dreamgirls).
Kristen Stewart has confirmed this during an interview with MTV News.
“I’m glad that’s out and about,” she said about the possible director choices. “I didn’t know that was something that people knew.”
Entertainment Weekly did confirm that Van Sant has been approached through his rep, but no word as of yet regarding Coppola or Condon. Granted, all of this speculation is premature, with Melissa Rosenberg still working on the script, which should be handed in possibly next week.
In other news, Summit Entertainment has also bought a six-figure pitch for The Last Witch Hunter from Cory Goodman with Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, 9) on to at least produce and possibly direct.
The script revolves around one of the last of a dying breed, a witch hunter who keeps the world’s population of witches and warlocks down, who are about to repopulate in a big way, unless he can stop them. The script has “franchise potential”, according to Deadline Hollywood.
Goodman’s only other credit to this point is the upcoming vampire western Priest, starring Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q, Karl Urban, Christopher Plummer and Brad Dourif, and is directed by Legion’s Scott Stewart. The film was originally slated for a summer release but is now in the process of a 3D conversion and is now scheduled to open Martin Luther King weekend, 2011. He’s also attached to a new “Kung Fu” film as well as a remake of David Cronenberg’s the Brood.
Considering Summit has hit gold with the Twilight films, no doubt they will put their own unique mark on witches (and witch hunters) too.
