Now that her involvement with the Spider-Man franchise is officially over, Kirsten Dunst has finally landed a lead role in Melancholia, a sci-fi disaster film written and directed by Lars Von Trier, according to Deadline Hollywood.
Penelope Cruz was in talks for the same role before deciding to jump ship to co-star as Blackbeard’s daughter in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Dunst joins a stellar cast that includes Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Charlotte Rampling, Udo Kier, Alexander Skarsgaard and Stellan Skarsgaard.
Though not much is known about the Melancholia’s plot, the film supposedly involves the death of planet Earth after another planet crosses into its orbit, and a variety of people as they cope with the tragedy. In a press release for the film, Von Trier used the phrase “no more happy endings”, so this film probably won’t be any more uplifting than his last film, last years disturbing Antichrist.
The film has a budget of $7 million and will shoot this summer from July through September in Southern Sweden.
