Koontz’s Frankenstein Heads to Big Screen

Koontz_FrankensteinWith all the hubbub going around Hollywood about vampires and werewolves, it was only a matter of time before other classic monsters got back onto theater screens. With The Wolfman bringing in over 30 million domestically this past weekend, there is reason to believe there is a big audience for “classic” horror monsters again. The latest of the classics to be added back into the fray is Frankenstein.

As reported here earlier, Lakeshore announced they were going forward on an adaptation of Kevin Grevioux’s I, Frankenstein graphic novel.  According to Variety, 1019 Entertainment has announced plans to produce a series of films based on the Frankenstein novels by Dean Koontz.

Koontz’s novels are set in 21st century New Orleans with Deucalion (the monster built by Dr. Viktor Helios) as the first of a new breed of super humans that were created through genetic engineering.

The first film of the possible franchise will be based on the book prodigal Son. Which follows two detectives as they hunt for a serial killer known as The Surgeon.  Deucalion suspects this is the work of his creator, and dedicates himself to battling him.

Producers Ralph Winter (X-Men franchise) and Terry Botwick (the Veggie Tales film franchise) will produce the series. Koontz has three books in the series as of now, with another installment to be released this summer and two are expected before the end of 2012. With six books to work from, Winter and Botwick hope that this will “keep the public coming back to the theaters for many years to come”.
