As “The Avengers” racked up more box office records and easily topped the box office, “Dark Shadows,” the campy Tm Burton remake of the 60s soap opera, failed to meet studio expectations in its opening window. The film took second place with $28 million, bringing in just over one quarter of ‘The Avengers’ second week box office earnings. The $100 million vampire film failed to generate the $35-40 million opening weekend that Warner Bros. had hoped for.
