Early and mid-December are always sluggish because of holiday preparations, but this weekend the box office dropped to its lowest level in three years. The weak results allowed Garry Marshall’s star-studded ensemble pic “New Year’s Eve” to win the weekend despite grossing a tepid $13.7 million.
