The apes have conquered the multiplex. Expected to earn around $30 million in its opening weekend, 20th Century Fox’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes surprised the box office with a $54 million opening, easily taking the top spot. Meanwhile, the weekends other new movie, “The Change Up” continued Green Lantern star Ryan Reynolds streak of underperforming films, opening far short of expectations.
