The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug roared to a strong $73.7 million in its domestic debut to take its place atop the weekend’s box-office mountain. Disney’s Frozen,now in its third week, took in $22.2 million to take the No. 2 spot for the weekend ahead of A Madea Christmas’ $16.16 million debut.
