James McAvoy is Professor X in X-Men: First Class

McAvoy_Professor_XJames McAvoy (Wanted, Atonement) has landed the role of the young Charles Xavier (Professor X) in the upcoming film, X-Men: First Class, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog.

X-Men: First Class will follow the relationship between the young Xavier and Erik Lensherr (who later becomes his arch nemesis Magneto) as they learn to control their burgeoning mutant powers. The two initially start out as friends, as they team up with other mutants to combat a global threat. As they do, a rift turns them into enemies, which leads to an eternal struggle between Professor X’s X-Men and Magneto’s Brotherhood.

No word yet on which other mutants will be in the film or who will play the role of Erik Lensherr/Magneto in the film, but Fox is expected to announce that shortly.  The film will be directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, Stardust) from a script by Vaughn and fellow Kick-Ass co-screenwriter, Jane Goldman, based on an idea by Bryan Singer. Singer is set to produce the film alongside Lauren Schuler Donner and Simon Kinberg.

Production is set to begin this summer in London, with a release date of June 3, 2011.
