Cinematic genius and well known pack rat, Stanley Kubrick, had many buried treasures when he passed on 11 years ago. Now it seems that one of those treasures will finally come to light. According to Production Weekly, a film based on pulp author Jim Thompson and the late Stanley Kubrick film treatment Lunatic at Large, is finally being produced, with Sam Rockwell and Scarlett Johansson both attached to star.
In an article in the New York times in 2006, Philip Hobbs, Kubrick’s son -in-law, unearthed the 80 page treatment in 1999 while archiving Kubrick’s papers after his death. “When Stanley died, he left behind lots of paperwork,” said Hobbs to the New York Times. “We ended up going through trunks of it, and one day we came across ‘Lunatic at Large.’ I knew what it was right away, because I remember Stanley talking about ‘Lunatic.’ He was always saying he wished he knew where it was, because it was such a great idea.”
The story is set in 1956, and tells the story of a former carnival worker with anger-management issues, who picks up a nervous and attractive barfly. After a romantic evening at a deserted mountain lodge, the barfly finds herself wandering through a carnival where she encounters the usual carnival sideshow freaks including an Alligator Man, a Mule Faced Woman, a Midget Monkey Girl and a Human Blockhead.
Work on the film treatment was finished in the late 50’s and Kubrick was set to shoot the film in the early 60’s, but the film was sidelined when Kubrick was offered Spartacus.
Though there no details on who will direct or further casting yet, this project is certainly worth keeping an eye out for.
