Scorsese to Direct Hugo Cabret in 3D

Scorsese_Hugo_Cabret_CastMartin Scorsese has decided to work in 3D with his latest project, the Invention of Hugo Cabret.  Scorsese has gone on record that he is very excited about the possibilities of 3D. “We see in depth, for the most part. We go to the theater – it’s in depth,” said Scorsese. “Why couldn’t a film like Precious be in 3D? It should be.”

According to Variety, Scorsese intends to shoot the film using 3D cameras instead of using a post conversion process as was done with Clash of the Titans. The film stars Asa Butterfield as Hugo, Chloe Moretz (Kick Ass) as a girl he befriends named Isabelle, Sasha Baron Cohen as the Station Inspector and Ben Kingsley as Georges Méliès.

As reported here earlier, the film is based on Brian Selznick’s Caldecott winning children’s novel of the same name. It follows the title character Hugo, a young boy who lives in the walls of a Paris train station during the 1930’s who after the clocks there. As Hugo attempts to repair a mechanical man, he gets caught up in a mystery adventure.

Scorsese will be working from a script by John Logan and principal photography is scheduled to begin in London this June. The Invention of Hugo Cabret is slated for release on December 9, 2011.
