Wood Drops Out of Web

Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark has hit another stumbling block. Evan Rachel Wood (Across the Universe, The Wrestler), who was to play Peter Parker’s love interest Mary Jane Watson, has dropped out of the long delayed production due to scheduling conflicts.

The producers of the show have stated that “Casting is underway to find a new ‘Mary Jane’ to join the rest of the cast in the production. Spider-Man will announce a new timeline shortly.”

This is just one more in a string of troubles that has plagued the musical.  When the show was first announced, it was hoping for a February 2010 opening.  Due to financial difficulties, the production has ceased and resumed production multiple times. Current estimates is that the budget costs of the musical are now around $50 million. The musical will feature music and lyrics by Bono and the Edge of U2, with the book by Tony Award winner Julie Taymor and Glen Berger. Taymor is also set to direct.

The Edge told MTV News in January “We’re just waiting until all the production issues get resolved. It’s going to happen at some point. It’s really a case of when — that’s the question.”

As previously announced, rock singer Reeve Carney will play Peter Parker/Spider Man and Alan Cumming is set to play the Green Goblin.
