Tommy Lee Jones Joins Cast of Captain America

After months of rumors and Hayley Atwell  letting the news slip on on a red carpet , Marvel has finally confirmed that Tommy Lee Jones will play Colonel Phillips in Joe Johnston’s Captain America: First Avenger.

In a press release regarding the casting news, Marvel mentioned that Colonel Phillips will be updated from the character of the early Captain America comics.  In the comics, Phillips recruits Steve Rogers for Project Rebirth, the secret experiment that creates Captain America.

Jones joins a star filled cast that includes Chris Evans as the title character, Sebastian Stan as his loyal sidekick Bucky Barnes, Hayley Atwell as the Cap’s love interest Peggy Carter, Hugo Weaving as the evil Red Skull, Stanley Tucci as Dr. Abraham Erskine, Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, Toby Jones as Arnim Zola, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, and Neal McDonough as Dum Dum Dugan.

Captain America is filming now in London and is set to hit theaters July 22, 2011.
