New Line’s $20 million horror pic The Conjuring raced to a $41.5 million North American debut, while R.I.P.D. dug itself an early grave in seventh-place despite costing at least $130 million to produce. This marked Ryan Reynolds latest comic book-based bomb and the fifth major disappointment for the studios this summer.
