The New York Times is reporting that Michael Cohl, the lead producer on Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark has told investors of the troubled musical that Julie Taymor will indeed step aside as director from the musical once negotiations on her contract regarding her creative legal rights and her financial stake in the production have concluded.
According to BroadwayWorld.com, a source close to Taymor is stating that the negotiations are now taking place in regards to credits she’s entitled to and possible future royalties. While these negotiations are taking place ‘on a professional basis,’ Taymor herself is said to be ‘extremely disappointed and deeply distressed’ about this turn of events. Sources close to her believe she will leave the production once the negotiations are concluded.
While this is news has not been expected, at this moment in time, it is not official. When asked this morning, Rick Maramontez, the spokesperson for Spider-man, could not confirm nor deny these reports.
The New York Times is also speculating that the producers will be shutting down performances for 2-3 weeks to overhaul the musical, as well as delay the opening until sometime in June. If this is so, it would be the sixth opening night delay for the production.
An official announcement regarding the future of Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark, is expected sometime this week. Stay tuned for the official word when it comes in.
