Spielberg May Helm Robopocalypse

Spielberg_RobopocalyspeWith filming completed on The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, speculation is running wild to what Steven Spielberg’s next directorial effort will be since he has recently passed on the remake of Harvey with Robert Downey Jr, and Matt Helm starring Jon Hamm.

So far, he is attached to at least six films in various stages of production and has another 20 or so in development, including a Gershwin biopic, a film based on the children’s book series The 39 Clues, and a Lincoln/Civil War project.  Now news coming in from Deadline Hollywood is that Spielberg’s next project might be Robopocalypse, based on an as yet unfinished book by Daniel H. Wilson.

Wilson’s book focuses on the human race’s attempt to survive after an robot uprising.  He has previously wrote “How To Survive a Robot Uprising: Tips on Defending Yourself Against the Coming Rebellion,” and “Where’s My Jetpack?: A Guide to the Amazing Science Fiction Future That Never Arrived” Wired magazine gave “How To Survive a Robot Uprising” a 2006 Rave Award, calling it “equal parts sci-fi send-up and technical primer.” His latest book, “Bro-Jitsu: The Martial Art of Sibling Smackdown,” will be out in April. “Robopocalypse” is due in bookstores in 2011.

Dreamworks optioned the book last November. Drew Goddard (Cloverfield) was hired write the screenplay and has already begun the adaptation and it seems that Spielberg is seriously eyeing it to be his next film but it is still just speculation.

His latest film, The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn is scheduled for release December 2011.
