After a year of complete uncertainty if Broadway would ever see the $50 million musical on stage, word now comes that Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark will start rehearsals on August 16th. Choreography rehearsals that include ariel flying lessons began this past Monday for Reeve Carney, who will be playing Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the musical.
Financial woes have plagued the production, which was to open this past February at the Hilton Theatre. Both Rachel Evan Wood and Alan Cumming, who were to play Mary Jane Watson and the Green Goblin respectively, had to bow out of the production due to scheduling conflicts. At this point, the only lead confirmed for the production is musician Reeve Carney, who is incredibly excited at the prospect of web-slinging on the great white way.
“I can’t wait for the world to see this thing,” Carney tweeted earlier on his Twitter page. “It’s finally happening. I honestly can’t believe I’m getting paid to do things my mom would have killed me for when I was a kid. Ha!”
Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is being directed by Tony-award winner Julie Taymor, with music from U2’s Bono and the Edge and book by Taymor and Glen Berger. Casting and performance dates will be announced shortly, with preview dates possibly beginning as early as this November. Stay tuned…
