‘Sherlock Holmes’ Underperforms But Still Wins Weekend

Sherlock HolmesFollowing on the last week’s poor box office results, the holiday season appears to be off to a less than stellar start. “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows ” missed estimates but topped the soft weekend with $40 million — compared to a $62.3 million opening for the first Sherlock Holmes film, which launched on Christmas Day in 2009. “Avin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked,” which took the number two spot, also disappointed. The family film brought in $23.5 million as yjee overall box office revenues tumbled 14 percent from last year.
