‘Mean Girls’ Opens With $32M Weekend

At the domestic box office, Mean Girls’ projected opening of $32 million on Martin Luther King Jr. weekend makes it the clear winner for the weekend. Due to the four-day holiday, an updated count will be released on Monday. However, the movie is doing better than expected.

Twenty years after Mark Waters’s cult favorite Mean Girls, starring Lindsay Lohan and adapted from a screenplay by Tina Fey, sauntered into theaters, the Paramount picture opens in 3,791 North American theaters. Based on the 2004 film and its subsequent Broadway musical adaptation, Fey comes back to pen the script for the upcoming feature. Internationally, it debuted in a small number of big regions, but it had a tremendous start in Mexico and Australia, where it topped the charts. The film cost $36 million to make before marketing, and it made $6.5 million in its overseas launch, for a total of $37.5 million at the worldwide box office.

Fey and Tim Meadows are back for their parts from the 2004 film, and the new film stars Angourie Rice, René Rapp, Auli’i Cravalho, Bebe Wood, and Christopher Briney. Following Warner Bros.’s Wonka and The Color Purple, Mean Girls is the newest Hollywood musical to take on the big screen.
