Gilligan’s Island to Head to the Big Screen

Gilligans_Island_Original_Cast…Really?!  According to Variety, Gilligan’s island castaways will be taking another fateful trip, this time to theater screens.  Warner Brothers has green lit the project based on the cult classic television show in which 7 unlucky folks take a three hour boat tour on the SS Minnow and find themselves washed ashore on an uninhabited island.

Though there is no word on how much of the original idea will translate to the film, Brad Copeland (Arrested Development) is on board to write the script, so there is a good chance that it will still be a comedy and not an edgy remake. Charles Roven (The Dark Knight) will produce.

“The characters are so good’, producer Charles Roven told Variety. “We think it’s going to be a great story to transport these cultural icons to the modern day.”

Good news is that the legendary  TV producer of the original show,  Sherwood Schwartz, is involved with the project, as well as his son Lloyd.  While there has been no cast news as of yet, Sherwood has said that he’d be happy to see Arrested Development’s Michael Cera as the title character, Gilligan.

One has to wonder why Hollywood is trying to remake a classic sitcom into a film again.  Most sitcoms haven’t translated well to the big screen (anyone remember either McHale’s Navy or even worse Car 54, Where are You?). The last sitcom remake that was a hit was 15 years ago, with The Brady Bunch Movie. Granted, that was another Sherwood Schwartz creation, so one can hope.
