Younger females proved their might at the North American box office this weekend, delivering a stellar $48.2 million opening for YA romance “The Fault in Our Stars,” starring Shailene Woodley and Anse lElgort as two young lovers who meet in a cancer support group. Fault easily beat Tom Cruise’s sci-fi snoozer “Edge of Tomorrow,” which opened to a problematic $29.1 million. The Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow title cost at least $178 million to make. This continues the recent string of failures starring Cruise, who has apparently lost his appeal among U.S. audiences.
