Tom Cruise is now set to star once again in Mission: Impossible IV. Paramount has confirmed the an initial report from DeadlineHollywood.com that the short of stature action hero will be reprising the his role of Ethan Hunt in the next installment of the franchise.
The studio is going full steam on the project, and although JJ Abrams will still be producing the film with Cruise, he will not direct the film, presumably in favor of focusing mostly on the Star Trek sequel.
The latest story will be based on an original idea by Cruise and Abrams, with screenwriters Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec (“Life on Mars”) writing the script. There is no word on who will sit in the directors chair for this film.
“Tom and J.J. are great talents,” said Brad Grey, Paramount Pictures chairman and CEO, in a statement announcing the deal. “We are excited to be working with them to re-launch this legendary franchise.”
The film is targeting a Memorial Day weekend 2011 release date.
