Andrew Garfield is the New Spider-Man

Garfield_Spider_ManAfter a long search, Sony Pictures has finally chosen the the its lead for the  reboot of the Spider-Man franchise.  According to The Hollywood Reporter, the role has gone to Andrew Garfield (the Red Riding trilogy, The Social Network).

Director Marc Webb is impressed by Garfield and stated at the press event “Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity.”

Garfield was part of a list that  included Jamie Bell, Alden Ehrenreich, Frank Dillane and Josh Hutcherson all in contention for the role, and was surprised himself when Sony made the announcement at a press event for international journalists in Cancun, Mexico.  Garfield was at the event as part of the cast for “Network” when he was told by co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment Amy Pascal just before the press conference that he would be the web-slinging super hero.

The reboot of the Spider-Man franchise places Peter Parker back in high school as he comes to grips with his new superpowers as his beloved uncle dies.

Director Marc Webb will be working from a script by James Vanderbilt and production is scheduled to begin this December.  The new Spider-Man film is set to hit theaters in 3D on July 3, 2012.
